I took my wife and her two nephews to calaveras sunday to try our luck after all I have been laid up all the month of March with the amputation of my toe and all, and needed to get on the water. We pulled up in the 181 cove there was a few boats there but not to many we were able to get to the back where I like to anchor the wife and slowly and quitely lowered our anchors and set them. We got the boys set up with some liver and shrimp, and I sat down to rest. Out of the blue I look up and here is this guy throwing a cast net within tweenty yards of the youngest boys line when I ask him what he thought he was doing he told me not to worry it was a big lake. I called the park office and they told me to call TPWD operation game thief. this guy was taking everything including cats it just tees me off. It makes it hard to set a good example for a youngster with jerks like that around.BTW this guy was wading the shore line.

I thought it was illegal to throw cast net in freshwater.

Some people are just idiots.... I would do what you did... let him know how you feel and hope he remembers it next time he sees you out there.
Hey Hotrod, that avatar of yours is disturbing..
Its illegal to keep game fish caught in castnet but it is not illegal to catch and keep bait with your castnet.
I thought it was illegal to throw cast net in freshwater.

David, i may be to blame for that.
They were in a large bass tracker with a bimini top? I was there sunday as well and went way back in a swollen creek fishing flooded timber and they were back there throwing and doing what you described...looking very suspicious..kinda creeped my guest out, honestly.
I asked them what they were trying to catch (kitties are back there shallow spawning) and they murmed and walked off after we ran them off. (LOL)
It's sad...they can't fish with line and reel so they resort to cast netting.
It is worthless , what's worse is it happened again later that day with a different boat. (large fish and ski circa 1900) We were reeling in fish every cast fishing some flooded timber in another area and they cam right behind us trying to catch fish..this time I asked them if I could help them and if they were lost?
Looked at me and said no, then I said well bye..
Take it with a grain of salt and hope you have a btter expierence next time you go out.
Sorry to hear that

I think you did the right thing legally in front of the kids showing them the right way to care of the problem. We as Adults no matter how bad you or I want to open a #10 can of whop *** on the guy, you have to ask what kind of example are we setting for the kids of today that are going to be our leaders of tomorrow. In closing I would like to say this, I thought you guys had ropes for those kind of people down there.....

calaveras was a joke sunday. I cant believe the amout of people out there...... some have no buisness even attemping to back the trailer down. I guess thats how you learn tho ? I sat in "Line" to pull my boat out of the water for 45 min ......the boat ramp is wide enought to accomodate three boats/trailers...not two or one. oh well...off my rant now sorry bout that.

There must have been quite a few of us 2coolers there on Sunday. What mess that was huh? My buddy and I took our boys out 7 and 3 years old.
We did catch quite a few channel catfish by the bridge. Fished with small shiners 4-5 feet under a cork.
Also caught 2 south american armored catfish- plecostamus in the cast net. I wish I had a tank big enough to hold one of them. They were pretty. one was about 12" long and the other closer to 18"

I was thinking of heading down there next Saturday. If it is going to be a zoo, I may try to squeeze a day out during the week.

I hadent been to that lake in a long time, I just got my gas tank repaired in my boat and wanted to test run it before taking it down to the coast. I dont fish it enought to know if its always that crowded. Could be also cause one of the ramps is closed and under construction ?
