I am making up a couple of calstar rods for swording and want to put bent butts on them when I can afford them, Can you put them on at a later time or does it have to be done when I wrap the rods?

I've built a few bent butt rods and think you would be much happier if you built the way you wanted them from the start and it wouldn't cost much more. You can get Pacbay or Amtak short bent butts for about $75 versus the $35 for reel seat, gimbal, rear grip.
I guess you could cut take a regular standup rod and cut it into right above the reel seat and install the butt but I'm sure that would compromise the placement of the grips, guides and overall of action of rod.
There is a great post on Bloody Decks on the subject from Scott Throop.

Also try Batson Enterprises for butts, as long your ferrel is the same size you can switch between a staright and bent butt.
